Family Service League- Helping in the Relief Efforts from Hurricane Sandy---
Those Long Islanders who struggle on a regular basis will have the hardest time getting back on their feet from the effects of Hurricane Sandy. The hurricane affected individuals and families who are already vulnerable, struggling with housing and food insecurity and the ability to meet their most basic needs. Family Service League must insure that low-income individuals and families impacted by the hurricane are getting the services they need in Suffolk County.
Families will have immediate and long-term recovery needs. Food, clothing and household goods are needed for families displaced by the hurricane. We will make referrals to federal and county services which can assist them are critical at this time. Crisis counseling is and will be needed for children and families who have been displaced, who are coping with changes, face uncertainty and stress, and/or face financial and job loss due to thousands of business closures.
Even after the waters recede and the trees have been cut down, the pain of change and loss will continue to impact families. Keeping families together and assisting those who struggle to cope due to mental illness and substance abuse are our daily challenges and now, with the trauma of Hurricane Sandy….these challenges have become magnified and are indeed the challenges Family Service League faces in the weeks and months to come.
