Family & Community Support

Family Service League offers numerous programs and services to help families in need in Suffolk county. Our professionally trained staff and volunteers are available to assist everyone from at-risk youth to expectant and new parents with education, counseling and referrals to helpful resources.

 

This partnership is a great example of how students, parents, community members and the school staff come together to address the academic, emotional, physical and social needs of every child— despite cultural differences and language barriers, empowering Brentwood students and their parents to become productive, responsible members of the community.

CAIR services provide individuals and families in need with information, referrals and links to FSL and other community agencies and resources. CAIR offers free walk-in or phone support to those facing problems such as food shortage, utility shutoff or potential loss of housing. Professionally trained staff and volunteers connect you to the appropriate program, government agency or other community resource.

CBHC works with East End communities to raise awareness and sensitivity about mental illness—including suicide prevention—through educational workshops and resource referrals. “Chat and Chill” groups are held in Montauk and Bridgehampton for young adults ages 18–30 affected by suicide.

This program provides short-term crisis intervention services to youth ages five to 17 diagnosed with serious emotional disturbance or those who have a mental health diagnosis and are considered “at risk.” Typically occurring over a three-month period, it includes an assessment, development of a short-term plan to address the individual’s needs and those of the family. Areas of focus may include mental and physical health, education, respite, recreation, and other areas related to the young person’s functioning.

A full-service pharmacy for FSL patients and staff at the Bay Shore location, Genoa serves the needs of the behavioral health community, improving access to medications and patient adherence and outcomes. The patient’s insurance is billed for medications prescribed, and financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

This home-visiting program in the Hempstead, Roosevelt and Uniondale communities offers services to expectant families and new parents with infants under the age of three months. Participants are screened to identify risk factors and stressors that the family may face, and receive long-term, in-home services until the child is pre-school age or kindergarten ready. The program enhances family functioning by establishing a nurturing relationship, improving the family’s support system, teaching problem-solving skills, building positive parent-child interaction, and promoting healthy child growth and development.

This program works with families who are at risk of their children being placed in foster care. If the children are currently in foster care, services are provided to speed their return home. A component of the program is Home Safe Parenting for parents who have been court-ordered to attend parent education classes. Parents receive six to eight weeks of training to enhance their parenting abilities and coping skills.

Available throughout Suffolk county, this program provides parenting education, counseling and case management to parents of young children. A series of parent/child workshops provides an array of parenting skills, developmental education and support. Parents and children may also receive individual counseling. OnTrackNY supports young people who may be impacted by changes in their thinking, hearing or seeing things that others don’t, disruptions in school or work, or pulling away from people and activities they care about. With a focus on early intervention, we serve young people ages 16-30 in Suffolk County within two years of first experiencing these changes.

With a community-based focus, our team employs evidence-based practices to help youth achieve their goals, prevent disability, and reduce hospitalization rates, prioritizing shared decision-making and offering flexible and accessible services. FSL’s committed team of professionals can operate within the community, providing a range of services, including screening, psychiatric assessments, therapy, crisis intervention, and peer support.

This program provides support, information, referral and advocacy to families raising children ages five to 18 with serious emotional and behavioral challenges.
